I wanted to discuss the correlation between people involved in the sex industry & having neurodivergent tendencies. I have noticed that many of my regular clientele are quite neurodivergent in their own quirky & beautiful ways. Firstly, what is a Neurodivergent person? The definition says, “Adjective - differing in mental or neurological function from what is considered typical or normal (frequently used concerning autistic spectrum disorders); not neurotypical. This can encompass a diverse array of people with diagnosed ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia & acquired Neurodiversity.
My ADHD Diagnosis
Now, we can get into these later, but I would recommend looking into it further at your leisure if anything mentioned here rings true to you. As I am only speaking from my own experience & don’t think it's a surprise to some of you, I was diagnosed with ADHD & have been medicated since 2020.
My condition was brought to my attention after a friend (also a Sex Worker) explained some of her symptoms that seemed very relatable. She also mentioned that since being diagnosed, she could overcome what had previously overwhelmed her, especially considering she was studying, working two jobs & maintaining a household at the time. Taking that on board kickstarted my journey into neurodivergence tendencies & therefore, I would eventually seek professional help.
Elements of Neurodivergencies
A few neurodivergent tendencies are finding it hard to cope with crowds, bright lights, loud, sudden noises, or social situations, social responsiveness, and difficulty focusing & keeping still. Therefore, attending social events, parties or dating in the modern age is quite overwhelming (even to some extent). In contrast, seeing someone privately in a safe space with good conversation & an enjoyable beverage excites the senses in a personable way. "Chameleon" One of the other tendencies which often makes it harder to diagnose women rather than men is a unique capability coined “chameleoning”, which is usually how neurodivergent people blend into their environment through observation & projection. They tend to observe everything in a new domain & then (usually through unintentionally gaining attention) project a version of themselves mixed with their surroundings that best suits that social interaction. They’re being themselves but in a way that serves those they care to impress or engage with. Their hyperactive mind is running overtime to fit in & that’s a hard act to keep up for an entire evening. These people have grown up in a world that has conditioned them to blend in & overachieve to feel relevant or of value.
Escorting Appeal
Some end up heavily invested in their work & build quite a considerable life for themselves. I am making them often punctual on their booking time & listing services within that initial dialogue. This is one reason I believe they value escorting as a means to a need; they know they won’t be stood up, ghosted, overwhelmed or misjudged. They understand this is a safe space to express themselves within an allotted time for a price & they leave with a massive smile after exploring an incredible new experience. Indulging in organic chemistry into an unforgettable time for them to get back to their priorities feeling refreshed, appreciated & confident. I know I can only speak for myself on this premise, but I suspect there to be a direct correlation between people who see/ are sex workers & have neurodivergent tendencies. But maybe that’s my perception because I am of that realm & a lot of my sex workers' friends are too.
In conclusion, I am grateful to be surrounded by outgoing, fun & quirky people who are culturally indifferent about finding fulfilment in life.
